Nosy Boraha, Sainte Marie Island, One of the last sanctuaries for Humpback Whales

From June to September every year, Sainte Marie’s plays host to thousands of humpback whales that come to find a mate and give birth in its calm, shallow waters. An astonishing experience for whale watchers.
Experience the fantastic mating rituals, spectacular breaches, and impressive pectoral and tail fin slaps; a curious calf « people watching » close to the boat, is summoned away by its watchful mother. Hear whale songs. Every year, for 10 days in early July, the Festival of Whales celebrates these great cetaceans.

uring whale watching season (July to September) Hotel Lakana will gladly organise your whale watching outing, on-board boats of partner members of Association Cétamada (cetamada.org) .
Your excursions will be supervised by trained Association Cetamada eco-volunteers, who also organise evening conferences and presentations on these magnificent “Giants of the Sea”.
